“WHY END POLIO NOW?”

Contest

In 2009, Students in years 10 and 11 in Ku-ring-gai Council area schools were eligible to take part in a contest to answer the question “Why end polio now?”  The program was conducted by the Rotary Club of St Ives to raise awareness about the importance of finishing the job of eradicating this dreaded disease forever.

We continue to encourage teachers and students to do some research on polio for this project:

-       What is the history of polio outbreaks in Australia?  When was the last case?

-       Do you know anyone who was infected with polio?  How was their life affected?

-       Has anyone you know lost a loved one to polio?  How did it affect their family?

-       Where is polio infecting people in the world today?  Why is it still happening?

-       How big a problem would polio be in 10 years if we stopped the mass immunization programs now?

We also encourage teachers from a range of disciplines to get involved:

-          History teachers

-          Geography teachers

-        PDHPE Teachers

-          Science teachers

-          Math teachers

-          English teachers

-          Creative arts teachers
